Course Overview

This 2-hour course covers essential HazMat employee and packaging requirements under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). Employees will learn about HazMat classification, shipping papers, marking and labeling, placarding, packaging requirements, exceptions, overpacks, and carrier and shipper responsibilities to support safe handling and regulatory compliance.

Introduction

This topic provides essential training on hazardous materials handling and transportation, covering classifications, hazard communication, evacuation strategies, labeling, and packaging. It outlines the responsibilities of personnel to promote safety and protect the environment, enabling them to identify and manage HazMat incidents effectively while ensuring safety for all involved.

Classifications Of Hazardous Materials

This chapter is designed to give hazardous materials employees and employers a deeper understanding of the various classifications and categories of substances that have been labeled hazardous by the secretary of the Department of Transportation. The categories are going to encompass several heads such as hazardous substances, hazardous waste, marine pollutants, elevated temperature material, limited quantities, or ORM -D. The candidate will also be educated about the various types of hazardous materials such as biological hazards, flammable liquids, toxic chemicals, corrosive materials, radioactive, and explosive substances in addition to several others. After the completion of this chapter, they will be able to identify and categorize hazardous chemicals and substances including insecticides, paints, oxidizing agents, and many more.

Hazmat Shipping Papers

Understanding hazardous materials-related shipping papers is a very important aspect of transporting, handling, conveying, and storing hazardous materials. These are also known as HazMat shipping documents and are essential for the transportation of these substances whether by air, land, or ocean ways. The candidate is going to learn how to protect the environment and also keep the hazardous material papers up to date such as the shipper information, consignee details, carrier information, and emergency contact information. This chapter also talks about how to maintain various fields in shipping papers such as description, quantity, packaging, placards, labeling, and handling instructions related to various hazardous materials.

Hazmat Marking

In this chapter, the candidate is going to learn the very basic and yet highly essential fundamental marking requirements for hazardous materials. They will understand the importance of proper shipping names and identification numbers that are assigned to every hazardous material within its package. This chapter is going to talk about how to create, maintain, and read labels and attachments given on any hazardous materials packaging. The candidate will also be able to interpret the various symbols, the class division of the material, subsidiary hazard labels, special provisions, orientation markings, and other important signs, and related documentation easily. This chapter enables the candidate or hazardous materials handler to take appropriate precautions based on the substance contained in a given container. They will also be able to differentiate between various categories, classes, and hazards posed by the substance contained in a given package.

Hazmat Labeling

The hazardous materials labeling chapter is very important because it helps the candidate identify and communicate hazards easily. Understanding and interpreting hazardous labels correctly also enables the candidate to choose the most relevant and easily administered emergency responses. These labels and their understanding are crucial because they indicate to the candidate the various protective equipment, hazard containment strategies, evacuation procedures, proper handling of hazardous materials, and storage and segregation of the material or substance that is causing exposure, among many other aspects of hazardous materials handling. HazMat labeling is also necessary for environmental protection, accident prevention, public awareness, and maintenance of regulatory compliance.

Hazmat Placarding and Packaging

This chapter is going to talk about the various rules and regulations laid down by the Department of Transportation and also how the placards have been defined in 49 CFR part 172.519. The candidate is going to learn how to verify each package according to the labels and markings on the container. The importance of fashioning placards and labels using specific materials such as plastic or metal is also talked about in detail in this section. This chapter discusses in length columns 7 and 8 of the hazardous materials table which concerns the authorized packing for most hazardous materials approved by federal bodies and the government. This module also discusses packaging exceptions and to which materials they apply among many other aspects.

Hazmat Security Awareness

Every employee, supervisor, or safety-sensitive position holder who comes in direct or indirect contact with hazardous materials is required to take this chapter very seriously. Anybody managing or supervising hazardous materials should be educated on the various emergency response plans and procedures, indications of hazards, emergency notification, personal protective equipment, evacuation processes, first aid, and medical assistance, among many other things. This chapter also provides them with enough basics about scenario-based training, regulatory compliance, and several case studies to give them ample knowledge about hazardous materials handling and transportation.
